Orphans Assistance

"The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few." Matthew 9:37

There are many orphans and other vulnerable children on Buvuma Island who would not be able to attend school without scholarship help.

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about out scholarship program at Kikongo Primary School on Buvuma.

Q: How long does a sponsorship last?

A: A sponsorship lasts for one school year (January through November)

Q: How much does one year of sponsorship cost?

A: $ 12 per month, or $ 144 per year

Q: What does a scholarship cover?

A: It covers the cost of the child's tuition at the school, textbooks, school supplies, a uniform, and a hot lunch each school day.

Q: What is an orphan?

A: The definition of an "orphan" in Africa follows the Biblical definition, and basically means "fatherless." Many have lost both parents or have been abandoned. Most of our orphans have lost parents due to disease, especial AIDS and malaria, and other tropical diseases.

Q: What is a "vulnerable" child?

A "vulnerable" child is one who may have one or both parents, but the parents are unable to afford to send their child to school without some help. We assist some of these families with partial scholarships (as funds are available) based on the recommendation of local community leaders.

Q: How much does World Gospel Mission take "off the top" for administrative purposes?

A: $0. 100% of all scholarships are directed to children's educational expenses. We have other donors who generously cover WGM's administrative expenses.

Q: How can I be sure that funds are used well?

A: You will receive frequent updates via web, email, and phone as to the latest happenings at Kikongo Primary School.

In addition, World Gospel Mission is a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, which ensures that the highest standards of stewardship are followed in Christian non-profit organizations. Audited financial statements are available on request.

Q: How can you do these sponsorship for only $12 per month when other organizations ask for about $38 per month?

A: There are a number of reasons why the sponsorships are only $12.

First of all, the funds are "scholarships" that cover the child's schooling costs. Many sponsorship programs are far more comprehensive and cover community initiatives, clean water projects, local clinics and dispensaries, and more. In addition, most "sponsorship" programs include their administrative and fund raising expenses as part of the sponsorship cost. We do not include any administrative fees in the scholarship program, as we have other sources of funds for those things.
